Research Security Training
Who Must Complete the Training?
All senior/key personnel – including PIs, co-PIs, and other individuals substantively contributing to federally funded research – must complete research security training within within 12 months prior to proposal submission or award modification and refreshed annually for the duration of the federal award.
Key Deadlines
Department of Defense: On a project by project basis; researchers should read through proposal guidelines to identify training requirements.
Department of Energy: Training required within 12 months prior to proposal submission, effective May 1, 2025.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Training required within 12 months prior to proposal submission, effective August 5, 2026.
National Institutes of Health: Training required within 12 months prior to proposal submission, effective May 25, 2026.
National Science Foundation: Training required within 12 months prior to proposal submission, effective October 10, 2025.
The training addresses cybersecurity, disclosure requirements, foreign influence and international collaboration, conflict of interest and commitment, and proper use of federal funds. Additional agencies are expected to implement the training requirements in the coming months.
How Do I Access the Training?
You may complete the training via the CITI Program. Once in CITI, select “Add a Course.” You will then be taken to a set of questions where you can select Research Security Training. The training is approximately 1 hour in length.
PI’s, co-PI’s and researchers that completed the training at Mines in April 2025 can access their training record in Workday.
How Often is Training Required?
Research security training must have been completed either at the time of application or within the 12-months prior to commencement of work on the award. Training is renewed annually for the duration of the award/project.
Institutions must certify that all covered individuals have completed the training. This certification is now a condition for receiving federal research funding.
If you have questions or need assistance accessing the training, please contact Research Integrity and Security at exportcontrols@mines.edu.
